With the recent judgement of the Supreme Court to not limit the ability of same-sex couples to wed, it would follow that it wouldn’t limit the ability of same-sex couples to divorce. However, this is nothing new since Minnesota has been recognizing same-sex marriages for a number of years now. There are many reasons that same-sex partners may be seeking separation, just as there are for straight couples. When it comes to family law decisions of same-sex couples, there are many questions that may need to be answered for Maple Grove residents.

When couples are looking to divorce, there are often questions surrounding asset division, child custody, alimony, and the process itself. In short, marital property is subject to equitable division (not withstanding a pre-nuptial agreement) and child custody is decided with the best interests of the child as the number one factor. Each situation will come with its own unique set of challenges, which we at Terzich and Ort LLP have seen many times over the years. It is best to assess these challenges right off the bat in order to plan the best legal strategy for you and your family.

Issues such as child support, alimony or even serious matters such as domestic violence may be a factor during the divorce proceedings. Family law attorneys can help navigate through these challenges in order to best represent their clients. At Terzich & Ort, we have seen many of these challenges first hand and know some issues can be particularly difficult for many of our clients to reconcile on their own. Regardless of the issue at hand, our firm strives to ensure that our clients’, and their children’s, bests interest are protected as fully as possible.

We are sensitive to the struggles you and your family may be going through during this difficult time of change. Divorce can seem like the worst thing that has ever happened, but as time progresses many people see that it was a necessary evil to transcend to a better place mentally, emotionally, and, perhaps, financially. The family is the primary concern of most parents and preserving relationships with their children is a number one priority. At Terzich and Ort LLP we understand this underlying need and address it with every decision we make.
